Summary

An opportunity exists for a GIS Analyst in Geographic Information Analysis (GIA) Team. The work area comprises of analysts and scientists working on diverse projects including spatial analysis, fisheries and their impact, modelling, Big Data, WEB applications and data management. The main purpose of the work is to provide information and advice to national and international customers, for example Defra, MMO and ICES.

The purpose of this role is to provide analysis, data management and advice on GIS related projects. The key task will involve analysing spatial data, creating automated processes, developing new algorithms and providing technical support to the rest of Cefas staff. The role involves producing high-quality outputs and their effective communication to a broad audience. The successful applicant will collaborate internally across other teams as well as externally with a range of other bodies (e.g. Defra, ICES).

Job description

The postholder will use GIS software, programming, and databases to answer, manage and analyse spatial data. They will draw on their knowledge of statistics for the analysis and will be able to communicate complex issues to both technical and public audience in the reports, presentations and deliver high quality GIS outputs. They will build and improve current analytical methods and work systematically to store and manage spatial data. The postholder will apply a structured, methodical, and well organised approach to deliver project milestones as required. They will work both independently and as a part of a team. The postholder will collaborate internally across other teams/groups and externally (e.g. Defra, ICES).

Responsibilities

It is essential that the successful applicant will be innovative with strong technical skills and will have a scientific background (ideally in the marine environment). They must be able to work effectively both as a team member and with minimal supervision within a professional working environment. The ability to plan and prioritise work to meet deadlines, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate with technical experts in other fields, are key to this position.

It is essential the successful applicant is able to demonstrate having the following:

• Experience in working in the marine science or environmental sector; and
• Excellent visual presentation skills.

Academic qualifications and experience required for direct entry into this Cefas Pay Band 5 role is a degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science. An equivalent qualification will be considered, as will equivalent relevant work experience

Technical skills

We’ll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Experienced in working with GIS software (preferably ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS).
  • Experience with Python or R programming in GIS workflows and statistics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of core GI concepts including projections and coordinate systems, interpolation methods, error propagation, geo-spatial data models.
  • A good knowledge of statistics, modelling and algorithm development.
  • A high level of IT competence, including the use of relational databases (preferably SQL and PostGIS or ArcGIS Enterprise).

Sift

Interview
If successful at application stage, you will be invited to interview where you will be assessed on the Behaviours and Technical Skills listed, your experience and strengths. You may also be required to give a presentation. You will receive further information to prepare for this if you are invited to interview.

To confirm at the interview stage there will be either a small scripting exercise which is likely to be in Phyton or R, or a small exercise on databases.

Should interview scores be the same, then a decision will be made based on the lead behaviour, Changing and Improving.

Reserve List
A reserve list may be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.

Salary
New entrants are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.
