POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (Geography)
Appointment Specification
Applications are hereby invited for the post of Postdoctoral researcher (Geography), at the University of Turku, in the Faculty of Science, the Department of Geography and Geology, the Geography Division.
The post is a fixed-term employment for 12 months starting in August/September 2021. The fixed-term is due to completing the tasks relating to the European Union Horizon 2020 funded research project Drivers and Feedbacks of Changes in Arctic Terrestrial Biodiversity. (CHARTER, see project website at: https://www.charter-arctic.org/).
The post is placed at the Geography Division of the Department of Geography and Geology. Geography is a broad-focused and versatile discipline at the University of Turku in the Faculty of Science. It currently includes 8 professors and about 40 researchers or other staff members.
The main research areas at the Geography are a) innovation environments and urban geography b) environmental dynamics and global change c) geospatial data, technologies and applications, and d) riverine environments and coastal areas. Geography is targeting challenges confronted at multiple scales from local to global. The Division has long-term research and education cooperation with European, African and South American academic and societal partners.
The duties
The duties of the Postdoctoral researcher are particularly related to work package 3 in the CHARTER project that focuses on the socio-economic impacts of Arctic environmental changes on indigenous populations and local communities (https://www.charter-arctic.org/work-packages/work-package-3/). More specifically, the main task related to this postdoctoral position is to bring in expertise in application of participatory mapping approaches to assess the livelihoods and perceived environmental changes among reindeer herders across the Arctic.
The duties include a) in collaboration with the wider project team to plan data collection across the study areas of the project, b) facilitation of data collection on the study sites (virtual and potentially on site) and data analysis, c) organizing internal workshop for project partners related to participatory mapping approaches, d) active participation in project meetings and seminars, and e) conducting research related to the topic.
A good applicant for this post has:
- Doctoral level theoretical and empirical research experience with references to participatory mapping, participatory approaches in land management, and perceived values on land and resources, under the socio-ecological systems framework
- Enthusiasm for community participation and for the development of spatially explicit approaches to understand community livelihoods and perceived environmental changes in the Arctic context
- Skills in co-designing and conducting research related to the topics mentioned above
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and academic writing skills in English
- Interest in working in inter- and transdisciplinary environment, and is a creative, supportive and problem-solving oriented team player
Position
The position can be filled in with a workshare of 100-50%. At 100% workshare the recruitment is for 12 months. The post is subject to a three (3) months trial period.
Formal qualifications
A person selected for the position must possess a doctoral degree in geography or related discipline with above described qualifications.
Salary
The salary for the position is determined in accordance with the university salary system for research personnel. The task specific salary component for the postdoctoral researcher is 3 000,49 euros per month (according to level 5 of the job demands chart). In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal work performance component is 6-50% of the task specific salary component.
