Postdoctoral Fellow – Water Accounting and Hydrology

  • Organization: International Water Management Institute (IWMI)
  • Last Date: September 20, 2021
  • Based out of headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka or at one of the institute’s major regional offices in Africa.

Description (Postdoctoral Fellow)

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) invites applications from highly motivated early career scientists trained in spatial hydrology, remote sensing and water accounting to be part of a growing team of experts developing tools for water accounting and water balance assessments applicable to a range of scales (from field to basin).

Background

As part of a multicultural, interdisciplinary team, the Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will contribute to the scientific development of approaches and applications for water resources assessment and allocation across multiple spatial scales, in order to gain an improved understanding of availability and use of water resources in Asia and Africa. In particular, the PDF will contribute to the Digital Earth Africa program, by working with IWMI’s Water Secure Africa initiative (WASA) to leverage state-of-the-art remote sensing approaches and data management technologies. By developing applications for the Open Data Cube (ODC) that can generate timely and quality information to understand water availability and use, water risks, and water values, the aim is to enhance the ability of African governments, communities and companies to better manage their water resources.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the scientific advancement and development of IWMI’s suite of water accounting methodologies.
  • Develop applications based on the use of remote sensing data and hydrological models to understand hydrological processes and quantify water budgets across scales.
  • Develop technical guidance on the application of different water accounting approaches suited to particular biophysical and water management contexts.
  • Prepare high-quality research reports and journal articles.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to implement innovative, remote sensing-based approaches for improved water management across the regions in which IWMI works.

Requirements

Educational qualifications, experience and skills:

  • PhD in water resources, spatial hydrology or a related subject.
  • Prior experience of working on large spatial data sets, and writing and executing scripts in Python for water resources assessments.
  • Experience in designing and implementing approaches for data-scarce environments.
  • Possess a strong analytical mindset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (knowledge of French will be an advantage).
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

If the successful candidate requires international relocation, s/he may be eligible for additional allowances, which could include shipping assistance, education, and home leave travel support for employee and eligible dependents.

The successful candidate will be based at IWMI’s Headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, or at one of the Institute’s regional offices.

TO APPLY

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through September 20, 2021 (Monday) at 24:00 (IST). Receipt of all applications will be acknowledged, but only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
