Job description:The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres we are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany. With approximately 1,300 employees our key mission is to secure a profound understanding of the systems and processes of solid Earth, to develop strategies and options for action in addressing global change and its impacts on a regional level, to understand natural hazards and to minimize associated risks, to ensure the sustainable provision of energy and raw materials for a high-tech society and to evaluate the influence of human activity on system Earth. As a partner in Geo.X, the GFZ has access to an excellent network of other geoscience institutions in Potsdam and Berlin. This largest regional concentration of geoscientific competence in Europe offers first-class cooperation and development opportunities. For section 1.4 “Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics” (department “Geodesy”), we are looking for a:
Reference Number 5947
As part of the long-term strategy development toward synergistic use of multi-sensor remote sensing techniques, we are looking for a PhD student / research scientist (f_m_x) in the field of Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) spectral range for soil applications in support of the implementation of the Observing System MOSES (Modular Observation Solutions for Earth Systems) in the research field “Earth and Environment” of the Helmholtz-Association. The PhD will focus on the development of methods in hyperspectral thermal remote sensing with the aim of an improved retrieval of terrestrial surface information related to e.g., the separation of temperature-emissivity signal, and advancements on soil parameter estimations covering multiple scales of observation (laboratory/in-situ/air- and spaceborne).
Your responsibilities:
- Develop concepts for the development of new methods for an improved characterization of soil textural and chemical composition based on thermal hyperspectral remote sensing, and support of the characterisation of soil and vegetation responses to heat stress
- Participation in laboratory, field, and airborne campaigns and operation of thermal spectrometers and hyperspectral cameras
- Pre-processing and analyses of thermal hyperspectral imagery at ground / field / airborne scale
- Development of standards and protocols from the data acquisition to the development of methodological procedures for retrieval of high-resolution temperature and emissivity, and retrieval of relevant thematic data for laboratory acquisitions, and application to remote sensing research
- Presentation and publication of relevant results in conferences and peer-reviewed scientific journals
Your qualifications:
- Master’s degree in geography, geosciences, meteorology, geoinformatics, or neighboring science
- Preferably with experience in the analyses of optical or thermal remote sensing data, including hyperspectral imagery
- High affinity for innovative use of latest sensor technology, creative thinking
- Programming skills desired (Matlab. R, IDL, python)
- Experience in the organization and conduction of remote sensing field campaigns (field spectroscopy) desirable
- Very good English and German skills, fluent in spoken and written form
