Position Description (PhD Fellow)

A PhD position in Arctic marine geology is available at the Department of Geosciences (IG), UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

The PhD position is within the project: “Dynamics of polar confined basins – The Eurasia Basin from breakup in greenhouse to present in icehouse conditions (DYPOLE)”. The overall aim of this project is to increase our understanding of the complex interplay between geological processes that have formed the continental margin north of Svalbard/Barents Sea and adjacent areas of the Arctic Ocean. DYPOLE is led by University of Oslo, where UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of Bergen and NORSAR are scientific partners. The UiT is responsible for Work Package 3: “Greenhouse – Icehouse fluctuations in the Arctic: onset and origin” where this PhD position will have its focus, working in cooperation with the other project partners.

The position is for a period of three years. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The position’s field of research

The primary focus of Work Package 3 will be to investigate: 1) the role of Arctic ocean basins in triggering climatic changes in the Cenozoic by better constraining the timing and consequences of the opening of the Fram Strait, 2) the initiation and implications of glaciations in this region, and 3) how the expansion and retreat of these ice masses influenced the storage and release of subsurface greenhouse gases (methane) from gas hydrate systems on the continental margin. The scope of the PhD project will be within these objectives.

The methodology for this work is seismic stratigraphic analyses of 2D and 3D seismic data integrated with lithostratigraphy from sediment cores and/or multi-beam bathymetry, some of which are already available at UiT.

The PhD candidate is expected to participate in a cruise planned for autumn 2022 to collect further marine geological and geophysical data. During the project period the candidate can spend up to 6 months at a research institution abroad.
